Many psychologists, biologists, mathematicians have expressed their opinion on learning… each one has contributed with a brick in an attempt to improve the understanding of this process. So, in this article today we want to tell you about interactive learning.

Let’s start by defining “learning” and “interaction”. According to the Accademia della Crusca, the first concept refers to the acquisition of a lasting conduct through practice, while the second to an action that takes shape between two or more objects, people, agents, forces, functions, etc. So what is interactive learning?

It is a form of dynamic learning associated with movement. It offers stimulating activities, which push the person to stay active by deepening their knowledge. For this purpose, several actors and elements are needed:

  • Teacher. It acts as a leader who motivates learning.
  • Pupils. They keep themselves active while learning.
  • Space. It can be a school classroom or another place, the important thing is that it is functional to learning.

In interactive learning we can include several tools that help to achieve the established goals. A recurring tool is to keep learning constant, avoiding procrastination.

How to teach interactively?

It is important that active learning activities are based on constant dialogue. The idea is that the teacher is more involved in learning, but in a global way, that is, going beyond the theory.

In harmony with the context and with the objectives, the teacher:

  • Plan the learning process.
  • It intervenes to motivate learning and to direct pupils.
  • Supervise the pupils’ work.
  • He shows himself open to dialogue.
  • Generate positive expectations about the content to be addressed.
  • It is innovative in the learning process

The teacher acts as a learning facilitator, which is why, in addition to the characteristics mentioned, he must know himself and self-manage. In this type of learning, therefore, emotions, cognitions and conduct also count. We are speaking, in fact, of a person who has to set an example: he gives the demonstration and the pupils observe, and then repeat or create.

In interactive learning, intelligence emerges in an integral way, for which not only the intellectual aspect develops, but also the artistic, cultural, empathy, self-regulation skills, etc. As a guide, the teacher must keep up and help enhance these skills. Great, right?

How do you learn interactively?

The pupil is an actor (active part), so he can be involved in all activities, for example by presenting a topic. After that, he receives feedback not only from the teacher, but also from his peers and from himself. You can try your hand at:

  • Inverted classroom. In which the best virtual and face-to-face strategies are applied. Moreover, here the pupil can develop different skills that will allow him to be able to count on integral learning.
  • Activities that promote learning by skills. It is about learning step by step, until specific skills are developed.
  • Interaction with technological resources or not. The pupil relates to various tools that promote learning; for example, participating in a brainstorming that takes place in a virtual and shared space, making an explanatory video, learning through games, etc.

There are many spaces dedicated to education and which have made interactive learning their flag. The important thing is to know how to look for them if we want to be part of this learning method which, although it has existed for years, is consolidating and enriching more and more thanks to technological progress. It does not only concern elementary schools, but also involves higher education.

There are many research studies conducted on the function of the virtual applied to learning . Arenas Márquez, Domingo Carrillo, Molleda Jimena, Ríos Martín and Ruiz del Castillo (2009), for example, in their article published in the Revista medios y educación , suggest that: “It is not enough to bring traditional material to a website, it must be adapted to the new space. To summarize, interactive learning relies on a relationship that takes shape in different contexts, in which the teacher, the pupil and the peers are involved; all in a dynamic and conscious way, so that each participant is involved. It goes beyond traditional learning models, integrated into an innovative proposal.
