Self-confidence: 5 ways to increase it

Self- confidence is not a static quality. On the contrary, it is a state of mind that requires considerable effort to be maintained when things go wrong. It must be learned, practiced and mastered on a par with any other skill. However, when you acquire it, you can get great results.

For this reason, in this article we present some simple and effective exercises to increase self-confidence . This, in turn, will  allow you to grow and face everyday life more easily,  also promoting emotional health.


1. Immerse yourself in the role

Our body language can be proof that we trust ourselves or it can cry out that we are insecure people. Present yourself in a way that reflects that you are ready to take control of any situation. If you demonstrate confidence and make this role your own, you will feel more confident and give the same impression to others.

Several studies show that  adopting body language that conveys  self-confidence makes you feel better. To do this, keep your head up, sit up straight, hold your shoulders back a little to align your spine, and look others straight in the eye when interacting. Give firm, confident handshakes and maintain eye contact when someone talks to you.

2. Dress to feel confident and comfortable

When you dress better, you feel better. If you choose clothes and accessories that fit you well, that fit your personality, your lifestyle and that make you feel attractive, you can increase your level of self-confidence

Introduce yourself in accordance with the role you want to have; in other words, dress to be successful. Don’t be afraid to highlight your personality with accessories: a few jewels, a particular watch or a flashy and eye-catching tie might be enough to start a pleasant conversation.

3. Speak firmly and confidently

The next time you listen to your favorite speaker, consider how he delivers his speech. A great speaker speaks confidently and with a steady, rhythmic tone . Instead of using thought fillers, such as “huh” and “mmm” that interrupt the flow of speech, use pauses to emphasize your ideas.

Use an assertive, but not aggressive, way of speaking that indicates your confidence. Also, to be taken  seriously, avoid speaking in a high-pitched or restless tone and letting out nervous laughter.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a prime example of a good speaker in the documentary series  Cosmos: A Space Odyssey . In this series  the presenter speaks by transmitting full confidence in himself,  always addressing the viewer and capturing his attention constantly.

4. Act and think with optimism

Another way to build self-confidence is to always look for the bright side of things and avoid negative comments. Smile and surround yourself with happy, positive people. You will feel better and the people you work with will be happy to be in your company.

To contribute to this good practice,  keep a  gratitude journal to remember the pleasant moments of your days,  as well as your successes. In this way, you will maintain a mood of gratitude and appreciation, which will allow you to develop peace and trust.

5. Take action

Having confidence in yourself goes beyond how you dress or present yourself: you have to act as such. Approach a complete stranger at a networking event   or accept a project you would normally reject. Be confident and you will immediately feel at ease.

Lack of action breeds doubts and fears, while movement instills confidence and courage. Write down your strengths and weaknesses.
